SCGS General Membership Meetings

Our speaker this month is George McKinney
on
"Captain Stephen Smith of Rancho Bodega"

Genealogical and Historical Research

Captain Stephen Smith is one of the seminal characters in the development of the North Bay. He was a powerful man who was typical of a breed that came into California before the gold rush and influenced what California is today. Smiths years in Bodega, his Bodega family, and his Miwok family have been fairly well researched. This presentation will focus on his seafaring experience and his New England family, which are not well known, and what happened to his family after his death. This will provide a window into the myriad of research techniques that can be used to obtain information for the early 1800s and the period from 1855 to 1880.

George McKinney has been involved with genealogical research for over 40 years. He inherited the McKinney mantle from his grandfather (as well as the family Bible). He is the Founder and Coordinator of Oakmont's Genealogy Club. George has a Certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University, and has previously spoken to SCGS on Marriage in America.
